I was lucky enough to interview the Subways’ Bassist Charlotte Cooper. Check it out below:
First of all, can you tell us who you are and what band you play in?
I’m Charlotte and I play bass in The Subways
How did the crowd react for you opening up for AC/DC’s Wembley stadium show?
It was pretty daunting gig for us – ACDC were the first rock gig Billy and Josh were taken to by their Dad. It was also a big deal for us to play at Wembley Stadium, as its one of the biggest venues in the UK. ACDC fans are notorious for not being that responsive to the opening acts, so we knew it would be challenging. In the end, although the crowd reaction wasn’t crazy, I think we made a few new fans!
Out of all the shows you’ve played, who was your favorite act that you opened for?
We’ve been lucky enough to play with so many amazing bands. I probably enjoyed playing with the Foo Fighters most. That is a band we aspire to, with such an awesome stage show. Everyone leaves their gigs on a massive high.
What do you think was your biggest accomplishment as an artist?
I think the amount of countries we’ve played in. For us, being in a band is all about the live show; getting everyone dancing and singing along, creating a party atmosphere. We feel very privileged to have been able to take our music all over the world.
How was it opening up for two of your heroes in the Foo Fighters and Oasis?
It was an overwhelming gig – for us and the people in the crowd. 2 of the best live bands together! It was great to meet both bands too. They were lovely to us
What is your upcoming to schedule like?
We’re currently working on new songs for our third album. We have some festivals over the summer, but not as hectic as our summers usually are. We’ll be working new songs in between festivals. We’re hoping to go into the studio after the summer, and then have the album out next year.
You haven’t toured America since 2008, when are you coming back?
I hope soon! We’ve had some amazing times in America. Our own headline small club shows, and supporting Taking Back Sunday, Angles and Airwaves and Headautomatica. We’d love to come back again.
You’ve played a lot of European festivals, but which one was your favorite to play? Why was it your favorite?
There’s a festival in Budapest called Sziget. Its crazy! 7 days of music, and all kinds of different music. Its a great festival to walk around and just take it all in. We played there last year, but I’m hoping to still go just for fun this year.
Have you started recording your follow up to “All or Nothing” yet? If so, do you know when we can expect to hear any new material?
See above! We hope to release early next year, but its not certain yet…..
Would you ever consider releasing an acoustic re-release of “All or Nothing?”
Its not out of the question! We do enjoy doing acoustic sets (although they can be quite scary – no distortion to hide behind!)
How was it working with the great Butch Vig on “All or Nothing?”
It was a once in a lifetime experience to work with someone like Butch. He has had a legendary career and so much experience. He’s a genius with sound, but is also one of the nicest people I’ve ever met!
Why do Josh and Billy have two different last names, when they are brothers?
Billy took the name “Lunn” in honour of his grandfather, who was a huge influence on him when he was younger. It was him that inspired Billy to write.
When did you learn how to play bass? What inspired you?
Billy taught me! I played other instruments before, so he just showed me where the notes were. Then I learnt more by playing Nirvana songs. I immediately loved the instrument.
What was your first bass? What basses do you own currently? What’s your rig on tour?
My first bass was a Squire P-bass, and I still have it! My main basses that I use on tour are Laklands, which are the best basses I have ever played. They are so powerful and produce a wonderful full sound. At home I have a few basses and a mini Ampeg, which is awesome! On tour I use an Ampeg SVT-2 head and an 8×10 cab. On bigger shows I have 2 8x10s, which just looks so cool!
Thank you for taking the time and doing this interview with us.
