On September 15th, I went to see Cut Copy at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo, N.Y. Having seeing Cut Copy at a major festival before, I knew what to expect, but then again.. You never know what to really expect when seeing a band at a festival and then seeing them at a club. About 5 minutes after arriving at the venue, the first band, Midnight Magic, based out of Brooklyn, N.Y. Midnight Magic consisted of 2 trumpet players, 1 keyboard/synth, 1 drummer, 1 electric bass player, and 1 female singer. The band played a combination of funk, disco, electro, and soul music. There were a lot of effects and synthesizer involved, but the trumpet players were the heart of the band. It gave the music a diverse feel and made the experience really unique.

The second band to play was Washed Out. Not knowing much about this band I decided to do some research. Washed Out is actually one-man band, Ernest Greene, from Georgia who signed to Sub Pop Records. For the Cut Copy Tour, he brought a full band including a keyboard player, beatpad and mixer, a bass player, a drum player, and Greene himself on a synth by using an iPad. Greene blew my mind. The music was mellow and chill. This is why his music is classified under being in the chill-wave movement. The crowd was really felt it. The venue started getting crowded quickly. I thought this also brought a lot of variety.

The next band to follow were the headliners, Cut Copy. Cut Copy is an Australian based electronic band. The band was formed in 2001 and has three albums to date. The band consists of 1 singer/keyboard/guitar, 1 guitar, 1 drum player, and 1 bass guitar player. Cut Copy has been gaining much popularity in America lately playing big electronic festivals like Ultra Music Festival and Camp Bisco.

Cut Copy put on an unbelievable show. The crowd was full of energy. I’ve seen them previously at Camp Bisco, but seeing them at a smaller venue with their true fans was a thrilling experience. Let me say that these guys have electro-jamming down pat. The crowd was moving to the music as if on ecstasy. Cut Copy achieved something that is often hard to execute, real music. They love what they play and how the crowd reacts. Cut Copy is one of those bands that is both great on iTunes but also sick live. I’m so glad I had the chance to go down and see them and can’t wait for their next show.
