[Interview] Motion City Soundtrack

Zack and I of RTS were apart of a Press Conference with Motion City Soundtrack on 7/17 at the Uniondale date of Warped Tour. Why this wasn’t posted before, I don’t know. Sorry Guys. It’s a bit late, but it still has some interesting questions. Here is our questions for Josh and Justin for Motion City Soundtrack:

RTS Nick: You have worked with Mark Hoppus twice. Once with Commit This to Memory and the other with My Dinosaur Life, I was wondering how that experience changed at all.
MCS Josh: He got a lot more relaxed. The first time around, I feel… well, not in attitude, he’s always relaxed, but the way he did things. He was strict on the way we did certain things on the first record, and on the second record, he was much more… like… wanting things to be a little more human and less making sure that they are perfect. Liking the performance more than being worried about being… Not that it’s bad!
MCS Justin: I feel a lot of that too. That was his first project and there was a lot of pressure on making sure that it was perfect and right. I think that would scare anybody. I think after doing a few records and coming back to us he was more relaxed now. He has done so many so…
MCS Josh: He’s confident! He’s confident! Not like that guy needs anymore confidence.
MCS Justin: Well…
MCS Josh: Just kidding. We’re joking.
MCS Justin: We joke.

RTS Zack: You guys are heading out on tour in the fall with Say Anything and Saves the Day.
MCS Josh: Oh!
RTS Zack: You only announced a Halloween show. When will an official announcement be made with all the dates and everything?
MCS Josh: Very soon.
MCS Justin: 2012
MCS Josh: *laughs* Very soon. I think it’s really soon. I think I just saw an email with a bunch of dates, and as the process gets closer… I don’t know when the official date releases are.
MCS Justin: Shit is going down. I apologize for the swear, but it’s going to be crazy.

RTS Zack: In January, you guys are heading to Brazil with All Time Low, how did that come together and stoked are you for that?
MCS Justin: It’s going to be amazing and we’ve never been there.
MCS Josh: Yeah, I think Brazil is weird, like “that’s really cool, we’ll go there,” but I don’t know where that came from. I don’t know if the Brazilian promoter wanted us, or… We share the same booking agent with All Time Low and it could have gone through with that channel… I’m not sure.
MCS Justin: I do know there has been talk in the past about us doing a tour together, but it never worked out. This time it did.
MCS Josh: It could have been them. They could have been like, “I want them.”
MCS Justin: Yeah, I’m very excited in going. I’ve never been there, like I have said before.

RTS Nick: You kind of had a rough past where you were addicted to alcohol and drugs and I wanted to know how that affected you…
MCS Justin: It fucked me all up! *laughs*
RTS Nick: …with My Dinosaur Life on how it was written, how the new approach was?
MCS Justin: I feel like, that if you would listen to the first half of the record, its kind about this time about being sober and you are falling off the deep end and coming back up through it and then sort of evening it out. That’s how I look at the record. I’ll say that the low point were the songs “Delirium” and “Disappear.” Then it gets better, then it gets worst, then it gets better, and then it kind of does that. I don’t know if I answered your question or not…
RTS Nick: It was good enough!
MCS Justin: Ok, cool. Thank You.

RTS Zack: So Josh, You have been off and on the tour with your wife having a child… Is that all different playing without him?
MCS Justin: Nope… Wait… Yes! Of course! We did have Brian Southall playing guitar with us. That was really awesome.
MCS Josh: That was really weird for us.
MCS Justin: Yeah, it has been 13 years since we have not played together.
RTS Zack: Was there a little separation inside?
MCS Justin: Yeah, but I got myself a teddy bear…
MCS Josh: He was bummed out because he couldn’t look at my side of the stage, and see me looking at him evilly because he fucked up.
MCS Justin: Every time I look at him, he looks at me with the stare of death, like “What are you doing?” But, that look actually means “I love you.”
MCS Josh: Yeah, It’s not “What are you doing, you idiot,” but it’s not really what I’m thinking.
MCS Justin: That’s your answer.
