In honor of Runner Runner’s debut CD release, Rewrite The Scene has an interview with Jon about various topics. Head to the replies to read the interview.

Me: What are some of the challenges of becoming a more popular band? Going from playing small town shows to nationwide tours.

Jon: Well, its a lot of challenges that go into being an artist or performer. Runner Runner started with wanting to write songs and wanting people to listen to them. And you know, sometimes the big challenges are you have to make everybody happy. You want to make your label happy, you want to make your fans happy, and keep yourself as an artist happy. Its about finding a balance. You know, I don’t really know. We love what we do and there are challenges all over, no matter what path you choose. It’s a matter of sticking it out and doing what you believe in. Overcoming it and everything will be good.

Me: If you weren’t in a band, what do you think you would be doing right now?

Jon: That’s such an interesting question because when I’m not touring, im home playing guitar all day long. Working on music and recording. I feel like before I started getting into music, I was into architecture. Designing houses was kind of fun

Me: What first got you into music? Was it a certain event or did you just pick up the guitar and fall in love with it?

Jon: I remember before I started playing an instrument, I was really fascinated by live music. I was like 6 years old and I was vacationing with my family in San Diego. There was this live band playing and I ran away from my family to go sit front row and watch this group play. My family had to go and find me. They had to send out a page to find me. I was at this camp ground on the bay and all of a sudden you heard “paging Jon Berry, paging Jon Berry. Please come to bla bla bla your parents are looking for you” . Then they saw me pop out of the front row and just run. I feel like I have always been into it. I remember listening to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Rage Against the Machine and just getting fired up. My first punk rock show was MxPx and I thought that was awesome. I started playing shows and music during my freshmen year of high school.

Me: Do you have any plans for after the tour? Are you going to go back into the studio?

Jon: Well as of right now we are just going to tour. The tour starts February 11 and the record comes out February 15. Were pretty much going to be touring all of the year. Its nice though because we are always writing on the road. Were also recording constantly. So I would love to get back into the studio by the end of the year.

Me: Runner Runner is going to be playing Bamboozle. Will you all be playing more big festivals later on this year?

Jon: As of right now we just have Bamboozle, but I think we are trying to set some other festival shows. Like overseas in Japan, England. A lot of stuff is just coming together right now. So definitely be on the lookout for more shows and bigger festivals.

Me: Do you have a favorite venue to play at while on tour?

Jon: One of my favorite venues is the House of Blues in Anaheim. It’s a great venue. I also like playing The Electric Factory. But the Anaheim House of Blues is my favorite.

Me: Do you have any cool tour stories you would like to share?

Jon:  There are so many. I feel like my favorite part about touring is playing a new venue everyday. Being in a different city and meeting our fans and people who appreciate our music. That’s what it is all about.

Me: For your upcoming tour, do you guys intend to play all original songs or do you have any cover songs you want to play?

Jon: I don’t know, I haven’t though about playing any cover songs. That’s a pretty cool idea. Maybe we will work that into the set. But were excited, especially for the record to come out. Its going to be a lot of fun

Me: Thanks for doing this interview Jon.
Jon: No Problem.
