Since we have started as a website, The Subways have been always good to us despite them being across the pond. Well, today I have some great news, we sent Charlotte from the Subways some questions and she was awesome enough to answer them for us. We thank her for taking the time to answer these questions as she is EXTREMELY busy. Charlotte answers some questions we have about their upcoming album Money & Celebrity (out in September), their tour upcoming plans and more! Click ‘more’ to check out the interview.
Well can you tell us some info on your new album, Money and Celebrity?
The Subways: We recorded the album in London with Stephen Street, which was an amazing experience. We think the sound and feel of the songs on the record are a cross between the pop melodies of Young For Eternity and the heavier more energetic sound of All or Nothing. Lyrically, I think this is Billy’s most accomplished work so far – he was quite affected by the financial crisis we’re all experiencing and the culture of celebrity that exists at the moment. Reality TV programs that perpetuate the desire to be famous for the sake of fame itself, without any ambition to work hard to be accomplished at anything.
How was working with Stephen Street? How did it compare working with Butch Vig?
The Subways: We have been so lucky to work with three amazing producers and have learned so much from them all. We love the sound that Stephen achieves; its quite a live energetic sound. He’s also a lovely person to work with and we had a brilliant time throughout the recording process.
RTS Nick: Since you are working with Stephen, have you listened to any Blur or any of the Smiths?
We love Stephen’s work with Blur, Morrissey, Kaiser Chief’s, The Cranberries etc. For me personally, I love Blur and Alex James is one of my favorite bass players. We take inspiration from a wide range of music: great live bands like the Foo Fighters, The Hives, Queens of The Stone Age and pop melodies and arrangements like Kylie Minogue and La Roux.
What song are you going to release first?
The Subways: The first single is now available on our website as a free download and its called It’s A Party. This song came about when we had spent several months in our rehearsal room working on songs for the new album. We missed being on tour so much; being onstage, seeing our fans go crazy. This song is about the awesome party we have on tour.
Why did you decide to use Pledge Music to help budget this album? You guys are signed to Warner Bros. Couldn’t you just use the budget from them? What made you guys use Pledge Music instead of Kickstarter?
The Subways: At the time of recording the album we had left Warner and did not have a label. We were very keen to start record the album as we had all the songs ready and didn’t want to delay any more. We found out about Pledge Music and thought that it sounded like a great way to obtain the funds we needed to make the album and also interact with our fans throughout the recording. We were also really drawn to the idea of a percentage of the funds generated being donated to a charity our choice that we are really passionate about. With the album now being released in September, we think Pledge has been an amazing thing for us to do. 9 months from the release of the album we were able to be in easy contact with our fans and get them involved with the making of the album; showing small clips of new songs and getting their feedback was brilliant. We’ve also asked for their input into the more artistic side of the album, for example we love the new logo which was designed by a fan.
It seems like that this summer, you are playing a few Festivals. Any word on when you will have a headlining tour?
The Subways: We have a tour lined up that starts in September and goes right through to the end of November. It takes in a lot of countries in Europe included some places we’ve never played before like Denmark, Sweden, Norway and going back to some of our favorite places like Germany and Poland.
RTS Nick: Now for the question I really want to know, When will you be in America?
Unfortunately we don’t have any definite dates planned yet. All of us really want to come back to America and do a full tour again, we loved the gigs we’ve played there. We hope maybe 2012 we can come back!
RTS Nick: Dammit, I was hoping for a New York date soon.
The Subways: New York is one of my favorite places in the world. I love the vibe of the city and can’t wait to come back and hang out there again!
When you and Billy were going out, you guys broke up and that apparently and rightfully so has caused some tension. How is your relationship currently?
The Subways: We’re like best friends! It’s 4 years since we broke up, so it feels like a long time ago now!
RTS Nick: How is married life?
The Subways: Being married is an amazing thing and the day of the wedding is a wonderful experience. I’m very happy!
Thanks for doing the interview Charlotte!
