During the Warped Tour Kick Off Party last week, I had a chance to sit down with MC Lars. I have been a big fan of MC Lars since I first heard his album The Graduate back in 2006. MC Lars will be releasing his new LP Lars Attacks! sometime in the fall. Amongst other projects, he will also be releasing a B-Sides Compilation entitled 21 Concepts, But a Hit Ain’t One, a mixtape for this summer called Indie Rocket Science Mixtape, an EP with Weerd Science, an EP with Random, a new book to hold his 27 Street Comics, another comic book and 2012-expected release in a literature album called The Dewey Decibel System. RTS Nick: So who are you?
MC Lars: I am Mc Lars!
RTS Nick: So before you were suppose to, you announced that you were playing the Warped Tour on your forum. Oops?*
MC Lars: *laughs* Oh Yeah. It’s ok. Not everyone knows. *laughs
RTS Nick: You also confirmed Bowling For Soup to play on the same post.
MC Lars: I have no idea if they are playing. They’ve been working so hard though.
RTS Nick: I don’t think they are playing. Aren’t you on Jaret’s label?
MC Lars: They released my last album, but I’m releasing a B-Sides album off of Oglio. It’s called 21 Concepts, But a Hit Ain’t One. The songs have been out, but we have never put it on a real album. With a few songs though, they have never been mastered like this. “WTF Scientology?”, “Everyone’s A Little Bit Gay,” “My Biochemical Terrorist Romance.” It will also have 3 new songs. One will be with Beefy. It’s called “Child’s Play.” “Nerdcore Died” will also be on it. That features Random.
RTS Nick: Are you going to do an EP with Random?
MC Lars: I really want to do an EP with him. Right now, I’m doing something with Weerd Science. He’s plays drums in a band called Terrible Things. We will be playing the Warped Tour with him. We are doing an album with him in the fall, and then I want to do something with Random. I love Random. We just did a literature song for a book called Flowers For Algernon. We did a rap where he’s Charlie as a boy, and I’m him as he goes through the mutation. Then it goes back to him when he slows down. We’re putting that out soon. It’s called “Me and the Mouse.” We want to do more literature songs. We’re working on other ones. We’re gonna do a whole EP and then see how it goes. I love Random. He’s just so talented. If I could sign him, I would. He’s just kicking butt on his songs and anytime I could take him on tour, I would. He’s just my favorite from that scene. He’s got talent. He’s not strictly whatever-core. He’s just awesome-core! You know what I’m saying!
RTS Nick: Yeah bro! Have you done anything with YTCracker recently?
MC Lars: He’s cool, man. We did an album. We did a bunch of tours and he’s so talented, but… he’s busy. He’s doing his own computer stuff and anytime I can help him I will, but we’ve done a bunch of tours. He’s got other artists he wants to work with. He does DG. He makes so much more money than I ever will.
RTS Nick: Does he really? I don’t know how he can make any money off of DG.
MC Lars: He does it…. via various things that are kind of like creative… Computer creativity. *laughs* He’s so talented though. With hacking and rapping. I love him like a brother.
RTS Nick: I was a member of DG for like a week. Then DG shut down… Kind of like your forum. What happened with your forum?
MC Lars: Yeah, we just got way too much spam. We just drove all of the traffic to Facebook and Twitter now. I couldn’t get any of the spam off! Maybe we’ll make a Horris Record forum and feature artists like Weerd Science and anyone else and MC Lars! That will come. I just wanted to give our forum some distance. I was on there over 10 minutes a day erasing spam. I would rather be writing songs!
RTS Nick: Are you going to be doing anything with K.Flay?
MC Lars: We did the EP together. She did some beats for our new album. She just signed this huge publishing deal and she’s going to blow up!
RTS Nick: She just got featured on “AP 100 Bands to Watch.”
MC Lars: *laughs* Recommended if you like *Points at himself* She’s a girl, she’s cute, she’s solo and she’s so smart! She’s going to be huge!
RTS Nick: I know you are playing with a band on this Warped Tour, but do you have a band to play Hearts That Hate yet?
MC Lars: I want to get Simple Plan to perform with me. They have done it before.
RTS Nick: Let’s talk about Lars Attacks! now.
MC Lars: So, we got Sage Francis on it. Sage Francis MURDERS it. He’s so good on it. I have a song with Weerd Science. He’s awesome on it. We have a guy from Bile on it. Krztoff.. They’re a metal band from Long Island who are awesome. I was always a big fan of them. I’m really proud of it. It has a different kind of twist to it. It has different kind of stuff on it. The rapping is faster, it’s harder and it has more energy. I feel like This Gigantic Robot Kills was a step back into the pop-punk phase. I mean I love the record, but I didn’t want to do that record again. This album is more intricate. There is live drumming on some songs. My friend John plays drums on a lot of the songs.
RTS Nick: Did he clean up his room? [Reference to a song off TGRK]
MC Lars: Yup. We recorded there too. *Calls over for John.* Hey John, how would you compare our new stuff compared to the old stuff?
Jon: I would say the new album is less in depth with pop-culture which was what he was all about back then.
RTS Nick: Jon, Have you cleaned up your house?
Jon: I would like to state for the record and this is for all the kids who have asked me…. My house is clean! It is more than clean!
RTS Nick: Was your house really that bad?
Jon: It was chillin’.
MC Lars: We recorded part of the album there though.
Jon: You know the song “Not Easy Being Green?” Well we did the lawn mower thing from the intro. We hooked up a mic from my lawn mower, to the window, to the computer. What’s even better though was in the credits, Lars credited the studio as “Crack House Studio.” *laughs* *leaves right after that.*
RTS Nick: *laughing* Are there any Pop-Culture references on it?
MC Lars: Just a few… We have a Mad Men song on it.
RTS Nick: I was hoping for a Charlie Sheen song.
MC Lars: There is a Charlie Sheen reference. In the song “Super Scope” I go, “Hash Tag Tiger Blood, Only the beginning. My crew is still here and we’re still winning.” After that I do a double time rap. So yeah, I updated it. We have an Odd Future reference. We love them.
RTS Nick: A while ago, you put out a book. Are you going to put out another book?
MC Lars: Yeah, I’m going to put out another 27th Street Book. I’m putting out a mixtape this summer called the Indie Rocket Science Mixtape. Then Lars Attack will come out at the end of August. It’s also going to have a comic book.
RTS Nick: Let’s talk about the Warped Tour. Who on the Warped Tour are you exciting to see?
MC Lars: Grieves is awesome. Yelawolf is amazing! My whole band loves Yelawolf. Big B is good. He has personality and swagger. His stuff is poppy and good. There is a lot of good hip-hop this year. The Skullcandy stage is going to be sick.
RTS Nick: Would you consider getting a ska band to help perform the song “This Gigantic Robot Kills?”
MC Lars: We are going to have a drummer and a bassist/guitarist, but we are going to probably play more hip-hop stuff. Half of the set is my stuff with Weerd Science backing me and half of the set is Weerd Science’s stuff with me backing him. We are playing “Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock.” We might even play “Signing Emo.”
RTS Nick: Sorry to rewind this, but you’ve mentioned how you love writing about literature. What books would you like to write about?
MC Lars: I have a song about the Edgar Allen Poe poem “Annabel Lea.” That is on the new record. K.Flay did the beat for that track. I really like that song. There are many songs I want to write about though.
RTS Nick: Would you write about Catcher In the Rye?
MC Lars: Oh yeah! That would be awesome! I always wanted to do a Catcher in the Rye song. I also want to do a song about Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Also I want to do Paradise Lost. There are a lot of classics. I want to do an all literature album called The Dewey Decibel System in 2012. That’s my next project.
RTS Nick: You have a lot of projects man!
MC Lars: I have to! Otherwise I feel like I’m dying…. Not to be dark.
RTS Nick: Thank for doing the interview man!
MC Lars: Thank you man. Great Questions!
