Can you tell us who you are please?
Lars: I’m MC Lars.
WS: I’m Weerd Science.
RTS Nick: So how’s Warped Tour right now?
Lars: Warped Tour is really cool. It sucked today because my merch guy couldn’t make it to Canada and I had to schlep all of my stuff a mile to the venue, but hard work pays off because we believe in what we do, DIY and we own our art.
WS: The buses are mighty far today and everyone had to do that walk… It sucks.
Lars, You recently performed a verse rapping with Less Than Jake on the main stage. How was that? Did you do a verse from a song or did you do a freestyle?
Lars: I sang on their song, “The Science of Selling Yourself Short” and I sang my verse from “We Have Arrived” from my album, This Gigantic Robot Kills. I changed some of the lyrics to make it more… ska appropriate.
WS: Skapropriate…. *laughs*
Lars: Unfortunately we can’t do it today since our schedules conflict, but we are going to do it again. The good about Warped is you never know when you’re going to play and the bad thing is, you never know when you’re going to play. It’s cool, some days you play the worst spot in the morning, but other days you play a prime slot at 3 or 4PM.
RTS Nick: Weerd Science, I wanted to know who you think has a better reception regarding the fans, You with Lars or Terrible Things?
WS: It’s tough to say… Lars’ crowd is much bigger, but… it’s two different things. My favorite show is when both shows are great. It’s a really great thing for me because Lars has been touring for years and building up his brand and his label… and I get to play in front of his fans. I’m glad because it’s two chances to turn people up to your art… That’s all you can ask for as a musician, an opportunity to perform your art.
Weerd Science was the first artist signed onto Horris Records, is there a plan to sign a second artist?
Lars: Maybe in a few, but right now my goal is for Josh (Weerd Science) to make enough money for him to do this full time. It’s really expensive for to promote a band full time, but it’s worth it when you’re promoting what you are believing in. Josh has a long career ahead of him and I want him to do this as long as he can.
RTS Nick: You guys made about $30K combined when it comes to your Kickstarters… Have you given back to Kickstarter by… donating to another band’s Kickstarter?
WS: Yeah we made $30K combined. I was stoked to make the ten grand.
Lars: I have not donated to a Kickstarter yet though… I have tweeted friends’ projects, but haven’t donated yet. I would definitely support it though.
WS: I think it gives back it’s own way… Lars doing a Kickstarter inspired me to do one and inspired my brother to do one for his band called 3. His band raised 12 Grand. I’m sure some people that saw him do it then started doing it. It kind of pays for itself. I haven’t heard a bad Kickstarter story yet. Everyone that does it realizes that there are people that care about their art. It’s fuel to a musician.
If you don’t mind, I’m going to go into a sadder note. Josh, you were in a band called Coheed and Cambria and although it was recent, you’ve probably heard what happened by now.
WS: Yeah.
RTS Nick: For those who don’t know, Michael Todd, their bassist was arrested for armed robbery after he held up a store demanding Oxicodine. Since you were an opiate addict, I wanted to know if you talked to Coheed yet and so on…
WS: I’ve spoke to those guy and I talked to Mike about an hour before he did it. There’s really nothing to say, I’m shocked as most Coheed fans are. I’m shocked that anyone did something that drastic and stupid. I don’t know what to say and I wish I did because it left me in a state of disbelief for a 24 hours. I was shell-shocked. I hope Mike gets better…. When I heard about it, I laughed and said, “No Way”. I thought rumors started…. you know.
RTS Nick: Armed Robbery… Who really would of thought he would have done that.
WS: Yeah, especially since I was JUST one the phone with him. Mike has a disease and you have to except personal responsibility, but he’s very sick. He’s going to be my friend no matter what and I wish him the best.
On a happier note,
WS *laughs*
RTS Nick: You guys are suppose to release an EP soon right?
MC Lars: We are thinking about making it a full length record.
WS: We are really excited about doing this, but there is a lot in the pipeline. My goal is to get to the level that Lars is on. I’m stoked about working with Lars because although Lars does a lot of collaborations, this didn’t have to work out… but it did.
You know what guys, I don’t want to take up any more of your time.. You’ve always been good to us at RTS, so thanks for doing the interview.
MC Lars: No Problem, any time.
WS: No problem, thanks for doing it with us.
