A few weeks ago, I did an interview with one of my favorite bands, Anti-Flag. Justin Sane was easily the most sincere and nicest people I have ever met, let alone interviewed. The interview went fantastic. We discussed his Anti-Flag’s upcoming album, Occupy Wall Street, his solo career and more! Trust us, this interview is a must read for any Anti-Flag fan. Can you tell us who you are please?
AF: My name is Justin and I sing and play guitar for the band Anti-Flag.
This is the last day of the tour, How has the tour been overall?
AF: It’s been one of the best tours I’ve ever done. It’s been so much fun. I love all the bands on the tour and I love all of the people. To be totally honest, I wasn’t that excited to go on tour right now. I have things going on at home that I have to deal with. I have a life there. I wasn’t excited to leave it behind. As soon as the swing of things came around on tour, I got to know people in the other bands and I saw old friends in NoFX and I became happy to be here.
RTS Nick: Since NoFX was headlining this tour, What are your upcoming plans? Are you going to do a headlining tour next or are you going to record another album?
AF: There is going to definitely be a headlining tour at some point. There will be a new record next year and the question now is, “When it will come out?”
RTS Nick: Do you know when you are recording the album?
AF: We already recorded it. We have the record already finished. We need to tweak it a little bit, but it’s just about done.
RTS Nick: What label will release it?
AF: Sideonedummy. We have had a positive experience there so far.
You guys were on a major label for a while. What was your transaction like from a major label to a independent label? From RCA to Sideonedummy specifically.
AF: Not any different than any other label we worked with and then changing onto another label. We’ve worked with a lot of different record labels and the change from RCA to Sideonedummy wasn’t any different from going to Go-Kart to Fat Wreck Chords. You find good people and you know them and you get excited to work with them. You put your heads together and you go for it.
I wanted to talk about your appearance at Occupy Wall Street.
AF: I’ve been following Occupy Wall Street since Day 1 and when I went to New York City, I decided to visit it. It was really exciting to see the growth of momentum. I wanted to be apart of it and show solidarity for the movement and the statement that is being made there. So, I went down and performed a couple of songs and I hung out for as much as the day as I possibly could. It was really empowering and really great.
RTS Nick: Have you attended any of the other occupy events?
AF: I have been to a number. Basically I went anywhere where they were taking place on this tour. I either stopped by or performed at each of them.
RTS Nick: Which one of the protests do you think has had the most impact so far?
AF: To be honest, I think that they are all really special. It’s really exciting to see this diverse group of people that recognize the fact that the country is headed in the wrong direction and we need to profound change. I believe the primary message is to focus on the distribution of wealth and the inequality of people in this country. It’s exciting to see all these people coming together.
After the headlining tour and the new Anti-Flag CD, Are you going to do a solo album?
AF: Yeah, Yeah, I’ve been playing solo recently which is really fun. I did a short solo run in Germany and it prepared me to go play Occupy. It’s something I really enjoy doing. It gives me an opportunity to play songs that are diverse from what I play with in Anti-Flag which is something I also love. It’s pretty positive.
RTS Nick: It seems like the right time to do it soon since Chris is going on tour with White Wives in December.
AF: To be honest it’s almost kind of the worst time to do it. As the new Anti-Flag record comes along, we’ll be really busy again. I think White Wives was something those guys did when Anti-Flag took a little break. Now, it’s ramping up all over again and now it’s going to be harder.
Growing up, I’ve always enjoyed Anti-Flag as a band. I went to my first Warped Tour just to see you guys so it’s a bit of an honor interviewing you. I always wanted to know the answer to this question, “In a perfect world, would Anti-Flag exist?”
AF: If the world was perfect… then it would be a lot different *laughs*. We would probably have the same stance for what we stand for, whether it’d be Love, Relationships, Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll. Unfortunately the world is not a perfect place. I would love to write a song called “Rainbows and Puppies”. Hopefully I will some day, but not today.
Thank you for the time for doing this interview. Do you have any last notes?
AF: Keep an eye out. Look at my twitter for updates for my solo stuff. It’s @Justinsanesolo. As far as Anti-Flag, follow us on our Facebook and Twitter.
