Rewrite The Scene

[Album Review] The Front Bottoms – (Self-Titled Debut)

Ironic, whiney, chaos, executed with precision and confidence. Simply put, The Front Bottoms punch you in the face with a narration style lyric pattern that somehow gets stuck in your head. Their songs are the farthest things from mainstream pop-songs, with the same effect. Although some of the songs seem to get lost in the mix, several tunes truly stand out. In an almost fascinating arrangement of driving drums, sing-along gang vocals, horns, and a lead vocal that is as unique as it is interesting, The Front Bottom makes a bold leap onto the Indie music scene.

The first song of the self-titled album, Flashlight is a suitable introduction to this up-front style that The Front Bottoms has adopted. It’s similar to listening to your friend telling you a story: there are no conscious attempts to make lines rhyme, in place of the usual constant need to rhyme stands Mathew Uychich’s ingenious use of rhythm in conjunction with Brian Sella’s vocal style.

The song Maps has been surrounded in indie-style hype, and is one of the better tunes off the album. Maps utilizes simplicity, plucking guitars, subtle strings, and a catchy melody to exist as “that song” off this album. Not to mention, the music video for this tune is actually pretty entertaining. Check it out here.

Simply out of respect to you as an intelligent opinionated listener, I don’t want to ruin the experience of this album by going through each of the 12 songs, and telling you what to expect. It truly is an experience that seems to evoke different opinions from everyone who I have talked to about this album. On that note, I definitely encourage you to grab this one, legally, or by other means. Hell, it’s an indie album. I’m sure they don’t mind how you get it. Just do yourself a favor and give this one a listen!

The Front Bottoms, they’re still underground enough to be cool. Catch ‘em before your mainstream friends fall in love.
